Saving Space for your Guest! - A Guest Bedroom Makeover by Studio Q Designs

I was asked to participate in another feature for the Washington Post called "House Calls".  It's where readers get to submit their design problems and the Post finds a designer to help them with their design solutions.  Here is my feature House Calls.  Enjoy and feel free to ask questions!

Here is the owners before pictures.  It's pretty tight in there the way they have it laid out.

Owners Design Issue:  The owner has a guest room that is nonfunctional in it's currently layout and is not very comfortable in style.  

Here were some of my solutions:

1. Since it's a narrow room change the rotation of layout.
2. The guest room closet can add more foot space to the room so use it!  Change the closet into a bed nook.
3. Add grasscloth wallcovering in the closets interiors as well as sconces for a cozy library look.
4. Use warm colors to make the room cozier, but add punches of color to liven up the color palette.  
5. The owner has a few canvas pieces of artwork, so mix it up with some frames photos of the grandkids.
6. Taking out the closet creates a need for storage, the platform bed has storage drawers beneath it. In the corner that you can't see in the photo has a tall cabinet for additional storage needs.  At the end of the bed I added an upholstered storage bench.  Perfect for sweater storage or to put on your shoes.
7. The room is narrow so inside of a dresser, add a console table to drawers for toiletries.
8. With the new layout you have room for a proper seating area.  USE IT!  
9. Don't forget the lighting.  This is a condo and most likely the ceilings are a pain in the but to add lighting to, so use lamps on surface areas like side tables.
